Morocco – Sample Itinerary

Day 1 (Sunday, September 8): New York – Casablanca

  • Depart the US – Royal Air Maroc AT201 from JFK to Casablanca

 

Day 2 (Monday, September 9): Casablanca – Meknes – Fes

  • Arrive in Casablanca
  • Drive to Meknes
  • Tour the Mellah (old Jewish Quarter) and synagogue
  • See the magnificent Bab Mansour Gate
  • Drive to Fes
  • Dinner at local Kosher provider
  • Overnight: Palais Medina & Spa, Fes (or similar)

 

Day 3 (Tuesday, September 10): Fes

  • Tour the Jewish Mellah, cemetery and Ibn Danan synagogue
  • See the Royal Palace plaza
  • Explore the winding alleyways of the Medina
  • Learn about the traditional crafts of the city – weaving, dyeing, embroidery, wood, tannery, ceramics, copper, knitting
  • Enjoy a panoramic viewpoint of the city from Borj Sud fortress
  • Dinner at local Kosher provider
  • Overnight: Palais Medina & Spa, Fes (or similar)

 

Day 4 (Wednesday, September 11): Fes – Ifrane – Erfoud

  • Travel South, crossing the mid-Atlas mountain range
  • Visit the Alpine town of Ifrane – Morocco’s “little Switzerland”
  • Follow the canyon of the Ziz river into the desert
  • Continue to the district of Tafilalt – origin of the Abuhatzeira family
  • Drive to Erfoud, on the edge of the Sahara Desert
  • Dinner at the hotel.
  • Overnight: Kasbah Hotel Xaluca, Erfoud (or similar)

 

Day 5 (Thursday, September 12): Erfoud – Todgha Gorge – Ouarzazate

  • Jeep ride into the Sahara Desert, watch the sunrise over the Merzouga dunes
  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • Visit the Jewish cemetery of Erfoud
  • Walk along the Todgha Gorge with its majestic cliffs and rock formations
  • Drive to Ouarzazate
  • Dinner at the hotel
  • Overnight: Berber Palace, Ouarzazate (or similar)

 

Day 6 (Friday, September 13): Ouarzazate – Marrakesh

  • Visit the picturesque Kasbah of Aït Benhaddou
  • Cross the Atlas mountain range via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass
  • Arrive in Marrakesh and get organized for Shabbat
  • Kabbalat Shabbat at Gueliz synagogue with the Jewish community
  • Dinner at local Kosher provider
  • Overnight: Radisson Blu Carré Eden, Marrakesh (or similar)

 

Day 7 (Saturday, September 14): Shabbat in Marrakesh

  • Shabbat services at the Gueliz synagogue with the Jewish community
  • Lunch at local Kosher provider
  • Optional afternoon walking tour
  • Dinner at local Kosher provider
  • Explore the night market at Jemaa el Fnaa square OR see a traditional folklore show
  • Overnight: Radisson Blu Carré Eden, Marrakesh (or similar)

 

Day 8 (Sunday, September 15): Marrakesh

  • View the Koutoubia Mosque from its surrounding gardens
  • Learn about traditional medicines and spices at a Berber pharmacy
  • Tour the Jewish Mellah and Al Azama synagogue
  • Visit the ornate Bahia Palace
  • Explore the many alleyways and shops in the Souk
  • Dinner at local Kosher provider
  • Overnight: Radisson Blu Carré Eden, Marrakesh (or similar)

 

Day 9 (Monday, September 16): Marrakesh – Essaouira

  • Drive to the seaside town of Essaouira
  • Explore the Medina
  • Tour the Mellah and local synagogue
  • Enjoy sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean
  • Dinner at the hotel
  • Overnight: Sofitel, Essaouira (or similar)

 

Day 10 (Tuesday, September 17): Essaouira – Azzemour – Casablanca

  • Drive to Azzemour
  • Tour the Medina and the Mellah
  • Drive to Casablanca
  • Tour the Moroccan Jewish Museum
  • Bus tour of the city center
  • Dinner at local Kosher restaurant
  • Overnight: Hyatt Regency Hotel, Casablanca (or similar)

 

Day 11 (Wednesday, September 18): Casablanca – Rabat – Casablanca

  • Drive to Rabat
  • Visit the mausoleum of the modern Moroccan kings and see the huge unfinished Hassan Tower
  • See the King’s Palace
  • Tour the picturesque Kasbah of the Udayas
  • Return to Casablanca
  • Visit Otzar Hatorah Jewish School and Beth El synagogue
  • Dinner at local Kosher restaurant
  • Overnight: Hyatt Regency Hotel, Casablanca (or similar)

 

Day 12 (Thursday, September 19): Casablanca – New York

  • Tour the magnificent Hassan II Mosque
  • Drive to the airport
  • Depart Morocco – Royal Air Maroc AT200 from Casablanca to JFK
