Morocco – Tentative Itinerary

Day 1 (Sunday, October 15): The Journey Begins

  • Depart the US – Royal Air Maroc AT201 from JFK to Casablanca.

 

Day 2 (Monday, October 16): Arrival in Casablanca – Rabat – Meknes – Fes

  • Arrive in Casablanca.
  • Travel to Rabat.
  • King’s palace in Rabat and the mausoleum of King Mohammad V, the legendary founder of modern Morocco, and his son King Hassan II.
  • Panoramic city tour.
  • Vist the Kasbah of the Udayas – time permitting.
  • City of Meknes – the royal capital of the great kings of Morocco. Visit the Jewish Mellah and synagogue, Talmud Torah school, the grain warehouses and stables, the mausoleum of Sultan Moulay Ismail, and the magnificent Bab Mansour Gate.
  • Travel to Fes.
  • Dinner at Jewish community restaurant or at the hotel.
  • Overnight: Park Zalagh Palace Hotel, Fes (or similar)

 

Day 3 (Tuesday, October 17): Fes

  • Royal palace plaza.
  • The Jewish Mellah, cemetery and synagogue – today the Ibn Danan Museum.
  • Madrasa Bou Inania.
  • The guilds of the city – knitting, copper work, weaving, dyeing, embroidery, wood, tannery, ceramics.
  • Observing the old city – the “Medinah”.
  • Tour of the modern city of Fes.
  • Dinner at Jewish community restaurant or at the hotel.
  • Overnight: Park Zalagh Palace Hotel, Fes (or similar)

 

Day 4 (Wednesday, October 18): Fes – Ifrane – Errachidia – Erfoud

  • Drive South, crossing the mid-Atlas mountain range.
  • Visit to the Alpine town of Ifrane – Morocco’s “Interlaken”.
  • Look out over the lake next to Errachidia.
  • Continue to the district of Tafilalt – origin of the Abuhatzeira family.
  • Travel to Erfoud, on the edge of the Sahara Desert.
  • Dinner at the hotel.
  • Overnight: Xaluca Hotel, Erfoud (or similar)

 

Day 5 (Thursday, October 19): Erfoud – Todgha Gorge – Dades Valley – Ouarzazate

  • Jeep ride in the Sahara Desert, watch the sunrise and pray Shacharit.
  • Breakfast at hotel.
  • Ancient Jewish cemetery of Erfoud.
  • The Qanat system – underground aqueducts.
  • Walk along the canyon of the Todgha river and through the Dades Valley, with their majestic cliffs and interesting rock formations.
  • Travel to Ouarzazate.
  • Dinner at the hotel.
  • Overnight: Berber Palace Hotel, Ouarzazate (or similar)

 

Day 6 (Friday, October 20): Ouarzazate – Marrakesh

  • Fortified town of Aït Benhaddou and its Kasbah.
  • Cross the Atlas mountain range via the Tizi Pass.
  • Arrive in Marrakesh and get organized for Shabbat.
  • Kabbalat Shabbat  at Gueliz synagogue with the Jewish community.
  • Dinner at Jewish community.
  • Overnight: Radisson Blu Carré Eden, Marrakesh (or similar)

 

Day 7 (Saturday, October 21): Shabbat in Marrakesh

  • Shabbat services at the Gueliz synagogue with the Jewish community.
  • Lunch at Jewish community.
  • Walks to nearby attractions.
  • Dinner at the hotel.
  • Overnight: Radisson Blu Carré Eden, Marrakesh (or similar)

 

Day 8 (Sunday, October 22): Marrakesh

  • Look-out over the Koutoubia Mosque.
  • The Bahia Palace.
  • The Jewish Mellah and synagogue.
  • Graves of the Saadian dynasty.
  • Colorful marketplaces of Marrakesh.
  • Tour of the old “Medinah”.
  • Dinner at the hotel.
  • Overnight: Radisson Blu Carré Eden, Marrakesh (or similar)

 

Day 9 (Monday, October 23): Marrakesh – Asni – Imlil – Casablanca

  • Jeep ride up to the High Atlas mountains.
  • Drink a cup of tea at a Berber’s house, and ride a mule.
  • Walk through traditional Berber villages and enjoy the magnificent mountain scenery.
  • Picnic lunch.
  • Drive to Casablanca.
  • Dinner at local Kosher restaurant.
  • Overnight: Movenpick Hotel, Casablanca (or similar)

 

Day 10 (Tuesday, October 24): Casablanca and Depart Home

  • Bus tour of the city, including the beach and promenade and the Hassan II Mosque.
  • Jewish sites, such as Beth El Synagogue, Jewish school and Jewish museum.
  • Additional sites – time permitting.
  • Lunch at Kosher restaurant.
  • Drive to the airport.
  • Depart Morocco – Royal Air Maroc AT200 from Casablanca to JFK.
